Q1: For what reasons can programs participating in the NAEYC Accreditation Process request an extension of their program's submission deadlines or accreditation status?
Programs participating in Steps 1-4 of the NAEYC Accreditation Process that experience a severe operational disruption in their services during the accreditation process may request an extension using the Extension Request Form. Typically, extensions are granted to programs that experience a severe operational disruption due to human or natural disaster. Examples include acts of terrorism, earthquakes, floods, etc. Access the Extension Request Form and read more about extensions.
Q2: What are NOT legitimate reasons for requesting an extension?
Reasons for requesting an extension for submission deadlines or accreditation status that are NOT legitimate include, but are not limited to:
Changes in administration and/or teaching staff Relocation Renovation Staff medical issues Addition or deletion of groups served Funding issues Administrative error Postal issues (without documentation) Needing more time to prepare/submit documents
Programs that decide to cancel a site visit or withdraw from the accreditation process following the denial of an extension request can read more about cancellations and withdrawals to determine next steps.
Q3: For how long are extensions granted?
Extensions to programs are granted on a case-by-case basis and are short-term. Typical extensions may range from one week to one month. Extensions beyond the next accreditation cycle are rare.
Q4: Can a program that operates for less then 12 months a year request an extension under this policy if their site visit window falls during a time when the program is not in operation?
No. Programs must provide specific information in the Application and Candidacy Materials regarding periods of time when the program closes or operates at a level in which the site visit can be conducted. This information is taken into consideration when scheduling a site visit. If the NAEYC Academy is unable to schedule a site visit prior to the school’s closing date, a scheduling extension is automatically granted and the program maintains its accreditation status until the end of the decisions process.
Q5: When will programs that meet the timeline for currently accredited programs receive an automatic extension?
If a program has met the deadlines established by the NAEYC Academy in the timeline for currently accredited programs, it will automatically receive an extension to its current accreditation term during the month in which its NAEYC Accreditation expires. Extensions are sent to the program's primary and secondary contacts via email and mail.
